Real Life Devotional Thoughts for Sports People

Real Life

Who is or was the tallest basketball player in the world? If you answered Yao Ming, you are close! In fact, Gheorghe Mureşan a Romanian who played for the New York Jets was the tallest at 2.31m. Who was the tallest man that ever lived in modern times? If you answered Robert Wadlow, you are right. He peaked at 2.74m. But none of these men were as daunting or horrifying as the 2.97m 12 fingered, 12 toed Goliath. Just the head of his javelin weighed 6 kilos!

Real Quotes

1 Samuel 17:32

David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

Corrie Ten Boom

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.”

Thinking About It

I have completed part of my UEFA Coaches License (football) and have coached from children all the way through to professional men. My present coaching situation has four boys playing up an age group in the first team. This means that some boys ‘tower’ over them. Showing due respect means recognise they are bigger but don’t shy away or fear them.

When we are challenged by daunting situations in sport or in life we need to do as David did. 1. Show adequate respect for the situation yet 2. NOT be fearful. In David’s taking 5 stones it is understood that he took one for Goliath and the other four were for Goliath’s four brothers who were also understood to be giants of incredible size. As it so happened only one stone was needed.

What are spiritual, physical, mental, life challenges that you are facing that are ‘playing on your mind’? Show due respect but remember that our Lord is at your side.

PRAYING because you matter

Lord, help me show due respect in the challenges that I am facing. Remind me, show me, that I am not facing them alone, but in your strength.
